General InformationHenderson is the main town of the Waitakere District Council. Just 30 minutes from Auckland's International and Domestic airport, Waitakere is New Zealand's fifth largest city. The City landscape enjoys a spectacular location as the western sector of New Zealand's major metropolitan area, Auckland . Here the concept of an eco-city, linking both business and environmental excellence has produced a city that is productive as well as clean and green. HistoryWaitakere City has a rich Māori heritage. The coastal belt to the west of the Waitakere Ranges was favoured by the Māori of the Kawerau iwi and about 50 Pa were built here to protect the coastal zone. Maori Translation of WaitakereWaitakere means 'Deep pools'. Another meaning is Cascading waters. It is thought that the Auckland Waitakere may possibly be a corruption of Waitekauri, Stream where the kauri grows; but it is almost certain that it was named after a chief who was murdered at the mouth of the stream. |
