You can reach the beautiful sun drenched destination by travelling south 2.5 hours from Auckland , 1.5 hours east from Hamilton , or just 1 hour from Rotorua. Te Puke known as the ‘Kiwifruit capital of the world’ is the main town in the Western Bay of Plenty District.
History

The Western Bay of Plenty has a long history of Māori occupation. The western area of the District (Tauranga Moana) was peopled by the iwi of Ngati Ranginui, Ngaiterangi, Ngati Pukenga, from the waka Takitumu and Mataatua. Te Arawa descendents from the waka Te Arawa inhabited much of the eastern area of the District and south to Rotorua.
Traders and missionaries were among the first European settlers, with early settlements, forming at Maketu and Tauranga The Bay of Plenty received it name from Captain James Cook when he sailed into the region aboard the Endeavour and was so impressed he aptly named it.
